Program Track: Emerging Concepts and Innovative Therapies

This session is intended to showcase clinical advances and/or translational research with direct application to patient care. The target speaker is anyone who has a validated innovation to share. Individual and team-based presentations are welcome for this session. Each speaker will give a 15-minute presentation on a specific topic, followed by a five-minute Q&A period. Speakers are selected by a blind review of abstracts submitted to the Academy.

Educational Objectives

  • • Gain knowledge of innovations and advances in clinical periodontics, research, or related subjects.
  • • Describe a new advancement or translational research with direct application to patient care.
  • • Explain the role of the regional acceleratory phenomenon in orthodontic tooth movement.
  • • Evaluate the versatility of dental implants in applying orthodontic force.
  • • Describe the rationale and current evidence for localized antibiotic delivery via resorbable membranes in GBR/GTR, including microbiological and mechanical considerations.
  • • Outline the glow-discharge plasma functionalization of PDO membranes with amoxicillin and analyze data on release kinetics, mechanical integrity, and biofilm reduction to inform clinical indications and limitations.
  • • Review the historical evolution of corticotomy and bone grafting for orthodontic purposes.
  • • Discuss factors influencing treatment sequencing in interdisciplinary periodontics–orthodontics cases.
